Ride For Five
The “Ride for Five” employee mass transit program provides access to all CATABUS routes to full-time Penn State University Park employees for only $5 per month. Transportation Services covers the remaining cost of each employee mass transit pass to encourage the use of mass transit, reduce vehicle congestion on campus, and promote sustainable transportation.
Eligibility Requirements and Program Rules
- Must be a full-time, full-benefit Penn State University Park employee
- May not have a daytime-access Penn State parking permit (or must return this permit when purchasing the “Ride for Five” mass transit pass), but may register for an evening/weekend parking permit
- Employee mass transit passes are valid at any time on all regular CATABUS routes
- Passes are not transferable and may be used only for the transportation of the individual to whom the pass is issued
- Employee mass transit passes are not valid on any other CATA service, including CENTRE RIDE, the Football Shuttle, Charters, or any special shuttle services, whether open to the public or not
How to Register
Interested employees should complete a program application (pdf) and submit it in person at the Parking Office at 1 Eisenhower Parking Deck during normal business hours, which are from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applicants must present their Penn State ID at the time of registration.
The "Ride for Five" mass transit pass is the property of Penn State Transportation Services and must be returned upon termination of enrollment or eligibility or upon request by Penn State Transportation Services.
At the end of each two fiscal-year term (current term ends June 30, 2016), pass holders will be required to obtain a new pass from the Parking Office for the new two fiscal-year term. Program participants will be contacted when new passes are available for pick-up. Typically, this is on or around June 1 prior to the start of the new fiscal year. Old passes must be returned and balances must be paid in full prior to receiving the new bus pass.
Employees may elect to have the cost of the pass deducted from their paycheck on a pre-tax basis. Employees not eligible for payroll deduction are required to pay the full fiscal year fee, in advance, by cash, check or money order (made payable to “The Pennsylvania State University”), major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover), or LionCash+.
For employees paid monthly participating in payroll deduction:
- The cost of the bus pass will be deducted from the employee’s paycheck issued on the last working day of each month. The evening/weekend permit will also be deducted if the employee has chosen this permit as an option.
- For any given month, a full deduction will be made for passes issued on or before the 15th of that month and no deduction will be made for passes issued on or after the 16th of that month.
- For any given month, no deduction will be made for passes turned in on or before the 15th of that month and a full deduction will be made for passes turned in on or after the 16th of that month.
For employees paid biweekly participating in payroll deduction:
- The cost of the bus pass will be deducted from the employee’s paycheck at a biweekly equivalent. The biweekly equivalent is equal to the monthly rate multiplied by 12 months and divided by 26, or $2.31 per paycheck for a monthly pass cost of $5.00.
- For any given biweekly pay period, a full biweekly deduction will be made for passes issued on or before the 7th day of that pay period and no biweekly deduction will be made for passes issued on or after the 8th day of that pay period.
- For any given biweekly pay period, no biweekly deduction will be made for passes turned in on or before the 7th day of that pay period and a full biweekly deduction will be made for passes turned in on or after the 8th day of that pay period.
Payroll deduction will continue without interruption until the employee requests, in writing, that the deduction be discontinued and surrenders his/her bus pass to the Parking Office. Unless and until the pass (and evening/weekend permit where applicable) is surrendered, payroll deduction will continue each pay period until the pass is turned in. For prepaid passes, a prorated refund will be issued for any passes returned prior to the expiration date.
Employees enrolled in the “Ride for Five” program are eligible to purchase an evening/weekend parking permit at a cost of $6 per month. This permit provides access to all faculty/staff parking lots beginning at 4 p.m. on weekdays and throughout the day on Saturdays and Sundays, with the following exceptions:
- Lot Green H at Hort Woods is reserved for child care center parking only until 6 p.m. on weekdays
- No parking is permitted at the Commuter lots (Lot 44, Stadium West, Porter North) between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., seven days a week
Participants with the occasional need for parking on weekdays prior to 4 p.m. may use one of the multi-space pay stations at Lot 44 or Stadium West to purchase hourly or daily parking at those lots. Visit the Multi-space Pay Stations page for more information on pay station parking.
"Ride for Five" to become "RidePass" beginning Summer 2016
Effective July 1, the “Ride for Five” program name will change to “RidePass.” The employee program with some alterations will continue to offer a discounted CATA ONEPASS (valid for all CATA routes) to eligible Penn State employees with standing, fixed term I, fixed term multi-year, and postdoctoral appointments.
To help ensure the financial viability of the program in the future, the following program changes will go into effect July 1:
- Monthly pass fee will increase to $15 per month (78 percent discount off the full CATA price)
- Program participants must live more than 1.5 miles (walking distance) from a CATA campus service Blue Loop or Red Link stop to be eligible for the “RidePass” program
In addition, all participants will have the option to choose a nine-month or 12-month transit pass when registering for the “RidePass” program. While participants may exit the program early and receive a prorated refund for time remaining on the pass or stop the recurring payroll deduction (depending on method of payment), participants who choose to exit the program before the pass expiration date will not be eligible to re-enter the program until the start of the next program cycle.
